Packers not happy with how officials called pick plays in loss to Falcons

The Green Bay Packers weren’t happy with the officiating in their Sunday night game against the Atlanta Falcons — specifically when it came to pick plays.

Officials called tight end Martellus Bennett Preston Smith Jersey for offensive pass interference with 55 seconds left in the second quarter, wiping out a 36-yard gain by Randall Cobb. Two plays later, Aaron Rodgers threw an interception, giving the Falcons the ball at Green Bay’s 36.

“I don’t know how you call pass interference on that when Marty is running a drag route, Cobb runs a shake route, and Marty is looking back at me and gets run into,” Rodgers said.

If you still think the cavalry is coming with trades, in-season free-agent acquisitions or a massive re-shuffling of who plays where on the Giants’ offensive line, Schwartz squashed all of that talk:

“They can talk about scheming a lot of chips in but that’s not really Ben McAdoo’s offense. The way he schemes in a chip is throwing the ball as quick as possible. Possibly Brandon Williams Jersey he’ll have some new formations, some new ways to get the ball out really quick and that is how they fix the offensive line,” Schwartz said. “There’s no magic pill, they’re not inserting anybody. That’s reason why I think McAdoo has remained really positive toward Ereck Flowers publicly, because what are you going to do? You can’t threaten to bench him and then not do it, right, if he plays poorly. So you’re not going to threaten him. That’s where they’re at right now.

“They did not address the offensive line position in the offseason and this is the offensive line they have going forward.”

Schwartz addressed a variety of other Giants-related topics during our conversation. There will be one more post this week, likely about Eli Manning, that will include some of Schwartz’s observations. Click the player above to listen to the entire show.

McMahill said an officer saw Bennett crouched down behind a gaming machine and started to run after seeing police

Officers then began to give chase, leading to one officer and Bennett going over a wall and landing on the sidewalk.

Due to his actions, McMahill said police believed he may have involved in the reported shooting. Further investigation revealed there was no actual shooting and patrons were frightened by what had been a loud noise inside the casino.

Bennett was briefly detained at the police department and McMahill said he had no issue with being taken into custody, but did have issue with the manner in which he was detained by the arresting officer.

The road to Minneapolis for Super Bowl LII begins 鈥?with a trip to REI for some thermals and gloves and hunting caps. But get back by Thursday night for the season opener, in which the Patriots begin to try to become the first team to repeat as champions since an earlier version of themselves did it in 2003 and ’04.

Obviously, then, the host for the primetime opener (hosted by the Super Bowl champ every year since 2004, except for the year a scheduling conflict sent the Ravens on the road) has never ended up winning it all. Nor has the winner of the opener 鈥?which has been the defending champion 11 out of 13 games. Conclusion: Don’t read too much into Thursday’s result.

Pete Carroll says he wishes refs had conferred before ejecting Jeremy Lane

Authentic Justin Hardy Jersey Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll took issue with the way officials ejected starting cornerback Jeremy Lane after they deemed that he threw a punch at Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams during Seattle’s season-opening 17-9 loss to Green Bay on Sunday.

Authentic Connor Barwin Jersey Lane was involved in a scuffle with Adams at the end of a wild play in the first quarter.

Green Bay’s defense had its way up front, leaving Russell Wilson running for his life and keeping the Seahawks’ passing from ever finding any rhythm.
I didn’t see the punch at all, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. I’m disappointed that play would have such a magnitude on the game. You guys have seen more of it than I have; I just saw a little thing on the telephone here after the game. It’s just such a drastic thing to do that I wish they would have had cooperation from more than one official and just talk about it and figure it out, because it’s such a big call. … But that’s what they saw. One guy saw it and that’s what they went with. I’m anxious to hear how the league tells how that went and what should happen there.

Lane was not seen in the Seahawks’ locker room after the game.

You can’t throw a punch, Adams said. If they see it, they’re going to call it. If you throw a punch at somebody, [which] makes no sense when they have a helmet on anyway, you’ve got to deal with the consequences.

Adams added that he was partly at fault.

We were just rolling around on the ground, Adams said. And it was something that definitely I shouldn’t have been doing, either.

The scuffle between Lane and Adams occurred after Seahawks rookie defensive lineman Nazair Jones intercepted an Aaron Rodgers pass at the line of scrimmage. An illegal block in the back on Seattle’s Cliff Avril during Jones’ return negated what would have been a touchdown.

NFL roster cuts 2017: Tracker, cut-down rules, deadline

When NFL team owners in May voted to eliminate the first of two traditional roster cut-down periods before the start of the regular season, they gave coaches an extra week or so to evaluate players who may or may not make their teams. Those players, in turn, were given extra time to prove their worthiness.

According to NFL referee Brad Allen the ruling was upheld on the field due to “lack of control in the hand.” Allen said (via the Washington Post) he saw an empty hand as Cousins’s arm went forward.

“There was nothing conclusive that would overturn the ruling on the field,” Allen said. “All the views we had were inconclusive, so we have to stay with the ruling on the field.”

Spielman, who was Miami’s general manager in 2004, was initially tapped by Minnesota as a personnel director before he was promoted to GM in 2012. Allen, who joined the Redskins in 2010 primarily in an administrative role, reassumed the general manager title after Scot McCloughan was fired earlier this year. Coughlin initially interviewed for Jacksonville’s head coaching vacancy, rather than the executive vice president role for which he was hired.

And then there’s Belichick, who when hired by New England in 2000 was given the same power over personnel moves he held with Cleveland in the early 1990s.

When Cardinals running back David Johnson left Week 1’s game with a wrist injury, it was Williams who assumed his lead back role. Williams is a significant drop-off from Johnson, of course, but is in line for something that matters in fantasy — volume. If you have Johnson, Williams is a must-add to cover your bases until Johnson returns and as further insurance. I’m tepid on his outlook for Week 2, but if you’re a running back needy manager, Williams is a logical target. I’m not totally sold, however, that he has this job entirely to himself in Arizona, which is why he isn’t the top player on this list.vikings_098

Broncos reportedly release safety T.J. Ward

There were rumors going around that the Broncos were attempting to trade T.J. Ward prior to this season. Instead, Ward has reportedly been released.

Ward tallied 181 tackles, five sacks, five forced fumbles and three interceptions in his three years with the Broncos.

The team has not yet confirmed the move.

Greg Hardy was accused, and initially convicted, of domestic violence against a former girlfriend. The complaint alleged that Hardy hit her, dragged her, and threw her on a futon covered with firearms. Hardy’s conviction was overturned on appeal, in part because his accuser did not cooperate with prosecutors.

She also did not cooperate with the league’s investigation. Still, Hardy was suspended for 10 games, which is more than the baseline. The policy allows for that if there are aggravating factors. But his suspension was reduced to four games on appeal.

Limited Womens Pat O’Donnell Jersey Perhaps the most shocking application of the personal conduct policy was the league’s decision to issue a one-game suspension to former Giants kicker Josh Brown after he was arrested for domestic violence against his wife. Brown referred to the incident that led to his arrest as just a moment, but police records showed that Brown had been accused of more than 20 acts of violence against his now-former wife.

The NFL defended the minimal consequences for Brown based on the fact that his former wife did not cooperate with the league’s investigation. The league later re-opened its investigation when documents were released in which Brown admitted to abusing his wife repeatedly. They issued a six-game suspension at the conclusion of that investigation.

This generation of GMs is far more willing to trade, an exec said.

Potential trade enabler: Eliminating the 75-man roster reduction creates opportunities

Before this season, teams reduced their rosters from 90 to 75 players before finally reducing to 53 for the regular season. Eliminating the reduction to 75 players is an obvious driver for some of the less significant trades. Teams looking to bypass the waiver system might be willing to part with a conditional late-round pick to get the fringe player they want. In essence, teams can claim a player via trade who would likely be cut anyway. They trade to bypass the market.

What happens next: Article 46 of the current collective bargaining agreement gives Goodell absolute power over player discipline. Henderson’s decision in this case is further confirmation of that and strengthens the league’s position when other players appeal disciplinary decisions.

Elliott filed a federal labor lawsuit against the NFL, and the NFLPA requested a temporary restraining order that would delay his suspension until the case is resolved. The NFL has filed a motion to dismiss, and a hearing was scheduled for Tuesday on that matter. The NFL said in the hearing that Elliott’s suspension would not begin in Week 1. The court expects to have a ruling on the petition for a stay on the suspension by the end of the week.

If Elliott changes his mind and chooses to just accept the ruling, or if the court doesn’t grant the restraining order that would delay his suspension, he’ll be able to return to the field against Washington in Week 9, because his suspension will not begin Week 1 as well as the Cowboys’ bye in Week 6.

The injury has been a setback but not one he’s worried will derail his season.

Win. From top to bottom, there is no team that can hold a candle to the depth of the Patriots. Head coach Bill Belichick knows that investing too much money in a single player is extremely risky because an injury to that player could disrupt the entire franchise. The Patriots were able to overcome the loss of Tom Brady for four games and the loss of Rob Gronkowski for half the season. That roster construction is why the Patriots are able to compete at the end of the season more consistently than any other team.

the Falcons have a new stadium this season.

There are weaknesses. The Pats are thin at defensive end, where they’ll hope Trey Flowers continues to develop into an above-average pass-rusher. There’s not much depth along the interior of their offensive line. Everyone has problems, though, and the other 31 teams would kill to have New England’s minor issues as their most pressing concerns. The Patriots aren’t perfect. They might just be good enough, though, to finish with a perfect record.

Meanwhile, the Falcons have a new stadium this season. The early reviews are mostly positive (lots of additional info here), though there are some problems with the retractable roof, which won’t be able to open for at least the first few games of the season.

After eight seasons of having players wear pink accessories during October to raise awareness of breast cancer, the NFL is taking a more diversified approach this season. Teams will now be able to designate a specific anti-cancer initiative to promote during a three-week period in October. The Packers, for example, have announced that they’ll be raising funds for the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation. It’s not yet clear whether teams will wear colored accessories for these games, but the early indications are that they will not, at least for 2017. Additional info here.

Although there has been no official announcement, expect to see the league’s other well-established monthlong uniform promotion — camouflage trim to salute the military in November — rolled out once again.

There has also been no official announcement about a reprise of last year’s “My Cause, My Cleats” promotion, in which players were permitted to wear custom footwear designs devoted to various charities in Week 13. But that initiative was popular with players and fans, so it’s likely to be revived for 2017.hornets_023

Kaepernick is better off at this point planning to re-launch his career in 2018.

On the night in 1968, when Smith and Carlos raised their fists in protest on the medal stand during the national anthem at the Olympics in Mexico City, Australian silver medalist Peter Norman joined them on the stand. He also joined them in their protest, not gesturing, but wearing a pin for the Olympic Project for Human Rights.

He didn’t have to. But for the sake of what Smith and Carlos were doing, he did have to. The white sprinter from another country is now a part of the moment and of the movement forever. Norman was vilified in some segments of Australian society and its athletic hierarchy from then on — but here, among those who cherish his sacrifice, he has been embraced.

Otherwise, Kaepernick is better off at this point planning to re-launch his career in 2018.

As well-meaning as the estimated 1,000 supporters were who gathered outside NFL headquarters earlier this week protesting his unemployment, history shows Kaepernick would be set up for failure if signed at this point of the preseason.

The 2015 NFL MVP made his preseason debut Thursday in Jacksonville, leading a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in his only series.

Newton threw just two passes on the drive, completing each for 21 yards. His second completion was a 9-yard touchdown to Kelvin Benjamin to give Carolina a 7-0 lead.

The Panthers have been cautious with Newton since he underwent surgery on his right shoulder in March to repair a partially torn rotator cuff. He sat out the first two preseason games before Thursday’s short night of work.

The thing that bothers me about this whole situation is the fact that he is going to all these camps and nobody seems to think he stands a chance of being No. 1. This is a young player who almost carried a team to a championship, to a Super Bowl — but I was a Ravens fan. … Somebody needs to give this young man a chance.

Kaepernick became a polarizing figure last season, when he kneeled for the national anthem in protest of racial discrimination and police brutality. He entered free agency in the offseason but still has not been signed.

But the question of which players will be standing and which will be kneeling before this season’s opener — and the rest of the regular season — is taking on added importance.

Imagine the reaction if white stars like Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski of the Patriots, or Alex Smith and Travis Kelce of the Chiefs, support Kaepernick in front of millions of TV viewers. Although Kaepernick is still out of a job, his movement has been picking up steam.
